Many religions hearken back to a time \u201cbefore the fall\u201d when people knew \u201cthe Way.\u201d Before our ancestors began to pay attention to the inner qualia inside their heads. Back in those, distant days, consciousness was determined by the outer landscape, which had dictated our every move since life began.<\/p>\n
At some point, however, our ancestors started to pay attention to the qualia within things, and within ourselves. \ufffcReacting to the qualia within was the simple, but revolutionary, \ufffcevolutionary change which freed our ancestors from the outer landscape. Our inner consciousness, a brand new landscape, was born.<\/p>\n
Alas, we were just beginning to follow the qualiadelic path, the path of inner enlightenment, when something happened. We, each us, began to notice, to become aware of, our own, individual uniqueness. This was an important change. My dog doesn’t even seem to realize he is not one of the cats. A bat doesn’t realize that the moths it is eating aren’t already part of him.<\/p>\n
As individuals in a community, self- consciousness can create a poignant sense of otherness, of us and them. Perhaps, noticing qualia within ourselves, we realized that everything had qualia within, giving them unique form and meaning. Such complexity must have been overwhelming to this new, childlike awareness, changing us and<\/em> then into us versus<\/em> them.<\/p>\n Instead of rediscovering \u201cthe Way,\u201d we capitalized on a different path. This was the real fall of man. Competition instead of cooperation.
