At work, in relationships, at play, even spiritually, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
When we cannot have what we are interested in, we go into something like a state of withdrawal. In withdrawal, it is extremely difficult to lower one’s Interest Level. Instead, we resort to changing our Participation Level; we try to avoid all landmarks and pathways that trigger the craving, whether it is for shopping, drugs, pornography, another job, another spouse, another religion, or whatever. But even when running away works (which is rare), it takes a long time before we can rewire our brains.
That is, it takes a lot of conscious ritualing before Interest and Participation Levels return to their natural balance. Only then will good, healthy landmarks and pathways once again begin to re-register and re-inspire our brains.
The grass is always greenest on the inside.
