Animals are completely bound up in their landmarks and pathways. Their senses, of course, are always open to new qualia, which might appear from in between or outside of the usual landmarks and pathways.

For animals, however, new qualia is usually interpreted as danger. But animals are curious, too, and why? Because, evolutionarily, as landscapes change (due to natural disasters, invasive species, etc.), and the familiar landmarks and pathways no longer provide, it is the curious ones who survive. In tough times the curious do not suspect new qualia, they inspect it, to discover its possibilities, its virtues.

Most of the dangers we face are of our own making – are intrinsic to the human landscape. The lesson we have to learn is to be curious about ecosystems, because all qualia, and especially the healthiest qualia, comes to us from ecosystems.
