When our usual landmarks and pathways fail us, we have to find another way to get what we need. We have to look around, notice something new, some new qualia.
The problem is that the landmarks we are used to noticing can make other parts of the landscape invisible. Animals instinctively notice certain qualia but never even see lots of other qualia. A finch may never notice bushes of a certain shape, or flowers of a certain color.
Like finches, people use specific landmarks and pathways habitually, and we cling to what we know. We miss a lot of qualia, which is fine…until we need it.
