The importance of the human landscape is merely that it satisfies needs and desires, but… we want more. Most of all we want love. Love does not last for the simple reason that love, as we are groomed to crave it, binds us to the human landscape.

But love shouldn’t enslave us, and it will free us, if we can teach ourselves, and our children, to love ecosystems.

We don’t have to understand ecosystems intellectually to love them, we have only to know them well enough to fill us with wonder. It is a kind of faith, yet we can be sure that wonders will not cease to exist.

We need to find others who are connected to ecosystems. Plants. Animals. Fungi. Soil. That is the only way to make love last.
