Obviously, routine needs to change sometimes. Indeed, traditions need to change sometimes. But traditions exist in history. So we don’t necessarily lose tradition. If we stop following one, it still stays in our cultural genes, just the way atavistic DNA does, to be resurrected when needed.

That is why we read history, so we don’t completely lose our traditions. Remain ignorant, and our traditions will be lost. Study history, learn how to think, and we can parse out the parts of traditions which we feel are not quite right, or are biased, or have an agenda, and consciously ritual with the parts that will make us flourish.

We learn history in order to not lose traditions, not lose what’s best in them. We learn history to learn how to think so we can use controlled spontaneity to ritual them into new human landscapes.
