A quite remarkable way to differentiate ecosystems from the human landscape is that ecosystems do not facilitate addictions.

Certainly, in ecosystems, there are seasons of plenty when Big Dopamine runs high, but they do not last long, and the creatures of the forests and the seas and even the deserts return to their Little Dopamine baseline free from cravings. This is normal.

The human landscape is not normal – it is, by and large, just a giant Big Dopamine factory, producing the stuff of addiction year round, and improving the dope every year. There are no seasons.

We have so much wisdom to gain from paying attention to ecosystems.
